Finland lies in northern Europe, became an independent republic in 1917 and has been a member of the European Union since 1995. Capital city: Helsinki (population 560,000). Finland has a population of some 5.2 million and a land area in excess of 338,000 km2. The total number of enterprises registered in Finland is more than 230,000, 99.8 % operates in the SME sector.

Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences
There are a total of 27 Universities of Applied Sciences, UAS, (previously polytechnics) in Finland. Of them 25 operate under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. The mission of the universities of applied sciences is to provide professional higher education geared to the requirements and development of working life, to support one's professional development, and to carry out research and development that serves the education, the work life, regional development and industry and commerce of the region.
